"As long as the water is cool the fish should
not experience too much stress, correct?"
Chad
Thanks for your question Chad.
You are correct.
This fish should not experience stress as long as the water is cool.
Today, Thursday August 31, water temperatures along the 7.6 mile catch and
release section of the Big Gunpowder Falls from Pretty boy Dam to Bluemount
Rd ranged from 53 F to 57 F.
We're in constant communication with State Fisheries Managers, biologists,
and Baltimore City, which ultimately controls the flow and temperature in
the Gunpowder. With their help and our constant monitoring of stream
conditions such as flow and temperature, we can better determine when it is
safe to catch and release trout without causing undue stress.
So, please go fishing and have a great Labor day weekend.
Hope to see you on the river and in the shop soon.
Best regards,
Theaux Le Gardeur

Fishing Report: Excellent Fly Fishing on the Big Gunpowder Falls Advisory |
|
 |
It's hot out there and much cooler along the river.Flow is at 111 CFs, gin clear and the water temp is 62 F at Falls Rd. Ants, beetles caddis and hoppers are still producing. Use 12ft to 14ft leaders ending in 7x and hold on, the wild brown trout are getting bigger in the Gunpowder.
Could the fishing get any better?

Note: Getting an early start?
Try small pheasant tails in #18-20 range in the riffles then switch to terrestrials by mid-morning.

The 28-32" Wild Brown lurking in the Gunpowder was hooked again on a guide trip this morning. Jeff Lewatowski guided two lucky anglers to the monster fish.
Ants , caddis and beetles are still all the rage, water is at a 113 CFs and at a great level for wading and 58-60 degrees F in the catch and release section of the Gunpowder.Mornings have been very productive with small terrestrials and nymphs such as a pheasant tail in the #16-18 range. Plan on fishing even during passing showers....click on the read more button...

The river is at a great level for wading at 115 CFS and is clear. Water temps are between 57-59F throughout the catch and release section. We're seeing lots of caddis in the morning between 6:00 and 9:00 AM. Fireflies have been working towards dusk. Fishing has been challenging on bright days. Nymphing with smaller than usual, (#20 and smaller bead heads have made a big difference. Japanese beetles are working.
We had a sixteen inch wild brown take a beetle in a deep pool last night as the mist was rolling in...fish on! Click on the read more button...
Note: A few words on the dead fish...Hooking injuries can usually be prevented by using barbless hooks and returning fish to the water asap. It's better not to take them out of the water and be sure to limit your handling of fish if you can. Thanks!

Bang the banks with large streamers and drift thumb sized nymphs through bottomless holes while floating in a raft built for comfort.
Jason's 14ft Outcast Raft has two sturdy casting platforms with thigh braces that will tackle the heavy water on the Potomac.

I have seen it with my own eyes, 9 minutes ago I was standing on the Masemore Bridge watching over a dozen fish rising in clear water to tiny #20-22 caddis. The water temperature is 56F.Ants and beetles should work fine. While most of the surrounding area picked up 6-12" of rain over the weekend, our gauge out back is only reading 3". We're not referring to days in December this time. These are numbers happy anglers keep giving us when we ask, " how big was the fish you caught today?" Fishing in the Winter can be solitary, and as lucky anglers are telling us, very productive. Small nymphs are still...click on the read more button...

A 15" wild brown is thankful that he was caught and then quickly released Wednesday afternoon. The only car in the lot was mine, how's that for pressure? The lucky angler was new to fishing moving water and his longest cast, including a 10 ft 7x leader was about 20 feet. The fish was in a fast shallow riffle about shin deep and made a bold move...click on the read more button...

The river is nice and low and the water temp is 56 F. Plenty warm enough for excellent dry fly fishing on cloudy days. Bring a rainjacket and experience some great fishing without the crowds. Jeff Lewatowski had a client out Saturday morning on the river and reported...
Note: Use enough shot so that the flies are actually getting hung up on the bottom about every half dozen casts.
