Fishing Report: Gunpowder River fly fishing with hoppers and caddis... |
|
 |
The fish are looking up. Water temps are 55 F, flow is 180 Cfs and the weather is not going to get any better. Small olives are still a good bet in the morning. Tired of fishing tricos? Come up and fish hoppers from your western box and use leaders in the 9 to 12 ft range in 6x. We had lots of smiling faces as the electroshocking survey concluded this past week. We will be posting results soon. A few sightings of fish have been recently reported in the 22-27 inch range. That's big folks!...click on the read more button...

With the electroshocking completed, the river is no longer at a placid 30 CFS...Expect water levels in the 170 to 180 Cfs range for the next few days. The water will still be clear, around 53 F and for many of the guides that work out of the shop, it's big fish time. Bigger flows typically mean that fish are on the feed and can be tricked with large streamers in the #6-8 range and heavy...click on the read more button...
Note: Readings from the USGS gauge are typically delayed 4 to 6 hours.

The fishing has been red hot! It's good to be on a tailwater! Flow is at 115 CFs, (a great level for wading). Remember that the river corridor is typically 10 -15 in degrees F. cooler than the temps you might see on the news. What better way to cool off then wet wading. Water temps are in the 62-65F throughout the catch and release area. Beetles, ants and small caddis have been working in very shallow riffles.Quite a few fish in the 9 to 14" range have been reported this week...click on the read more button for more reports...
Note: Wet wading this weekend? We just opened up a few boxes of guard sox and SIMMS river sandals by KEEN that have sturdy toe bumpers and felt soles.

Yes, the river is flowing at 111CFs-- a great level for wading. Numerous reports of fish caught on cinnamon and black ants have perked up a few eyebrows. Water temps in the high 50's have made for very active fish throughout the catch and release section. Early morning nymphing should work fine...click on the read more button...
Note: Some of the best fishing all year occurs through the Summer months during and/or just after a passing thundershower.

The river is low and clear at 66 CFs. Water temps in the high 50s-today we measured 57 F have made the fish very active and the rain in the forecast should help anglers get closer to fish this weekend. Expect the river to move a little this weekend and drop just as quickly. Some of our best days this past year on guidetrips were during and just after a spot of rain. Hendricksons in a #14-16 and quite a few Quill Gordons in #10-12 have been accounting for some nice fish. Soft hackles sized...click on the read more button...

Fishing Report: Excellent early season fishing awaits...Black Fly Redux.. |
|
 |
It's still hard for me to to believe that we've had such great early season fishing during the past two weeks. The river is at a nice steady 76 Cfs , ( we typically fish it from 55 to 225 CFs so if it moves a little over the weekend it should still be clear and very wadeable-just bring your rainjacket along. We've had warmer water this week after a gate change from the 55 foot level to the 10 foot level. With a little spillover, the river temps are now in the mid 40's and climbing--think active fish!!!We've heard many enthusiastic reports of between 1/2 dozen to three dozen fish caught during some mid-week outings. With rain in the forecast this weekend, early morning nymphing should be very productive. Stop in and check out a few dynamite Hendrickson nymphs, (while they last) that are sure to move a few. Little black flies are still... click on the read more button...

The river is in great shape. It's clear and at a comfortable level for wading. Little black flies, (aka: snowflies) in the flat water above Falls have been creating quite a stir, especially if you like to cast to rising fish. Further downstream, ...click on the read more button...

Yes, we have spillover. Pretty Boy Reservoir has been spilling over the face of the dam since Tuesday. The river is back to a normal Summer flow of 2.2 on the stick, which works out to just a little under 173 CFS. Fish love this kind of water. It's gin clear, warming and dropping, so this weekend should be a great one for you to to get out and try your luck.Jeff Lewatowski and Jason du Pont, on a busmans' holiday yesterday, released over 2 dozen fish from Falls Rd up to the Dam. Stop by the shop and give the pictures a look Most of the fish released were over 10" with quite a few 12-16" fish in the mix-including a beautiful 14"rainbow. Most of the fish fell for small nymphs but large streamers accounted for the largest two fish. This weekend...click on the read more button...
Note: You can't catch fish if you don't go fishing. It's 65 F in January-- find a way to get on the river this weekend.
