Fishing Report: A fishing report from a flyshop along the Gunpowder River |
|
 |
Low water, a bald eagle, a few Olives and some sipping fish greeted me at Masemore this morning.Mine was the only car in the lot and the dogs had a nice run-leashed of course-- along the exposed gravel downstream of bush cabin run. The water temp is 52 F and we'll see more of this "bony" water for awhile. The fish don't seem to mind and they're a few weeks away from spawning so try a few dries in the next few days. Small caddis, Bwo's and traditional streamers are still very productive. Following are a few stream reports from Bill and Steve-Thanks for keeping us in the know...and for the kind words...click on the read more button..

Thanks to all that braved the rain today to fish locally. The Gunpowder is beautiful. Masemore Rd. access upstream through Falls is clear and still flowing in the low 100's, that means knee deep to shin deep water throughout most of the catch and release area-.A strong report from one of our guide trips yesterday related that well over two dozen fish were hooked...click on the read more button...

After several days of spillover and rising temps, (and great discourse with fisheries and the City-many thanks to Gene and Charlie) a recent gate change will cool things down for a while. Expect to see flows in the 100 to 150 Cfs range, a great level for fishing. Cooler water temps in the low to mid 50's will be welcome after quite a few days in the high 60's. Be sure to bring plenty of weighted nymphs along and plan on swinging soft hackles through the riffles. click on the read more button...

The river is low, clear and warm at 66 F.Midday fishing has been tough. Spinner falls in the evening have been slight but with a few warm evenings ahead try your luck close to dark with a #16 or smaller dun trailed by a #14-16 spinner. 7x tippet will make a difference...
Many thanks to Ellen for the following report:"
Hi!
Here is my report for the story archive:
May 26-29: the annual Chesapeake Women Anglers' trip to Mill Pond Cottage at Masemore Road. Anglers from beginners to experts enjoyed the opportunity to be on the Gunpowder from dawn to night with breaks for great food, wonderful company, and excellent wine. Superb conditions for fishing, but the water level is alarmingly low for this time of year. The fish liked us, too: in total, the group caught about 30 trout, browns and rainbows ranging from 6" to 16" [two major brown trout, one taken on a spinner at the riffle above Masemore bridge in the evening of May 26th and the other taken above the power lines on a large (12) light Hendricksen at 7:30 am on May 28th]. The sulphur hatches were magnificant, but often discouraging since the fish probably have enough natural food to be ultra selective about artificials. At nightfall (8:00 pm) I took 6 at the riffle just below the big water at Masemore, using a large double humpy with a lurid yellow belly [I know, it was strange, but it must have got their attention]. Could have kept on going but it got so dark that I missed too many strikes. Early morning fishing at Masemore and Bunker Hill was a treat, two hours before the angler "hatch" arrived. Small (14-16) duns, larger blue winged olives (12-14), and parachute Adams (14) all worked well. Afternoon fishing: ants were successful down by Monkton. Thanks to BWA for all your assistance and advice!
Ellen

Water levels have been wonderfully stable during the recent rains. Ideal flows of 65CFs to 185 Cfs have been maintained even after heavy local rains. Currently the river is at 105 CFs, is clear and beautiful. Water temps, still in the high 50's, make for happy fish. #14-16 Sulphur Emergers, Duns, and Spinners, (after 7:00 PM) have been producing. The Sulphur Unusual tied with Snowshoe rabbit has been outstanding this season. We stll have some left-give us a call and we'll be happy to drop a few in the mail to you...click on the read more button...
Note: As the trees leaf out, fish seek out shade-so should you.

The river is alive in the morning with lots of Caddis activity. Soft hackles and emergers have been working from Bunkerhill through Falls Rd. Sulphurs are just starting, a traditional sulphur wet paired with a soft hackle caddis should work fine.
Water temp is at 59 F, so we're seeing some very active fish. Flow is at 73 CFS, so we have lots of riffles and flats to cover

Note: We just received some great Sulphur Patterns-Tied by Mike Bachosky out of quills and snowshoe rabbit...Don't leave the shop without them.

The river is low and clear, 100 Cfs and water temps along the catch and release area are from 54 to 56 F. It's getting hotter out there so expect a few late afternoon showers. Passing thunderstorms have not kept folks from fishing. Ants sized #12-16 are a good bet along shaded banks. Spinner falls are still later in the day so fish just the last hour of daylight with a rusty spinner #16-20.Two anglers from the eastern shore stopped in on their way up to Bunkerhill and Maesmore yesterday and were excited to see all of the new pictures of Rainbows released over the past two weeks in the upper section above Falls Rd.Following is an stream report from a real trooper that stuck it out and fished in spite of the cir*****stances...click on the read more button
Note: Bring a rainjacket with you and remember that some of the best fishing is on overcast days.

The river is clear and is flowing at close to 100 CFs. Don't let the afternoon showers put you off get out and catch the 11" to 14" fish we're seeing on a regular basis. Morning fishing from 7:00 AM on with loop wing sulphur emergers sized #16-18 has been red hot. Straw to ginger colored X -Caddis sized #14-18 have saved more days on the river than any other pattern I can think of... Great stream reports continue to roll in..Spinner falls have been... click on the read more button. S

The river is up 2 CFs after the rain-102 CFs is a great level for wade fishing and the water is 54 F.
We've had lots of reports of rising fish. Sulphur emergers are working, particuarly those with CDC. We had a nice group in from Ohio fishing the river today in the rain. click on the read more button...
Note: Fish a rusty spinner in a size #14-16 at dusk in flat water below Masemore through Bunkerhill.

The river is in great shape. It is clear and at 120 Cfs. Dave just stopped in to report seeing a hundred and fifty rises in about an hour and a half yesterday at Masemore. He's been fishing the river for 25 years and is out today enjoying the sunshine. Even cloudy days have been very productive and I can't think of reason why YOU should not be fishing the Gunpowder-unless you 're primed to hear about how many fish your buddy caught this week, I'd drop everything and get up here....click on the read more button for recent reports...

Lots of Sulphurs are tumbling down the riffles between the dam and Bunkerhill . The river continues to be at a great level for fishing at just over 2 ft on the gauge , that's 122 Cfs-remember best levels for wade fishing are between 90 Cfs to 250 Cfs...click on the read more button
