A fishing report from a flyshop along the Gunpowder River

Low water, a bald eagle, a few Olives and some sipping fish greeted me at Masemore this morning.Mine was the only car in the lot and the dogs had a nice run-leashed of course-- along the exposed gravel downstream of bush cabin run. The water temp is 52 F and we'll see more of this "bony" water for awhile. The fish don't seem to mind and they're a few weeks away from spawning so try a few dries in the next few days. Small caddis, Bwo's and traditional streamers are still very productive.
Following are a few stream reports from Bill and Steve-Thanks for keeping us in the know...and for the kind words...click on the read more button..

The Gunpowder River is Low, Clear and full of fish...

The river is low at 34 CFs, clear and full of fish. Backwater Angler guide Jason du Pont led a client to several nice fish today with x-caddis and stimulators on long, thin leaders. The water temperature is 52 F and the fish have been looking up.Dries or unweighted streamers are a good bet. Small Bwo's should work fine as long as it's a bit cloudy-or early. Caddis in the #14-16 range are best bets above Masemore rd through Falls. If you'd like to fish higher flows, check out the lower river. The 5 fish a day stretch received 750 new rainbows on October 13th.
Low water in the Gunpowder river for awhile...

We'll be experiencing some low water for awhile. Water flow is at a low, low 24Cfs so bring your Summer rod-a 7' 7" 3wt 4pc Scott G2 would be nice. Small water calls for small flies so fish tiny olives, caddis and brassies and be sure to bring along some 7x. Expect to see some ankle deep water out there folks-think lower river and have fun out there...

click on the read more button for a great stream report from this weekend...

If you don't, others will. Here's a little insight as to who might headed up this weekend based on local drive times from folks we're proud to call regulars.

The South Jersey and N.
22" gunpowder river rainbow still swimming...

Ask Jason about the 22" rainbow that got away.Streamflow is 182 Cfs, the river is clear, cool at 52 F and is taking on some beautiful Fall color. We've had quite a few reports of chunky browns in the 10-14" range taking size #14-18 caddis and #12-14 stimulators. Nymphs that imitate black fly larvae-think zebra midges have been dynamite-especially above Falls Rd. Large terrestrials should work fine in the #8, yes #8 through #12 range.Smaller, more traditional streamers such as Grey Ghosts and Mickey Finns are easier to fish than bulky patterns, get down fast, and the fish eat them. Leaves are falling along the trails and can be slippery even out of the water so now is a great time to consider putting in a new set of spikes in your wading shoes.Click on the read more button...

Come up and fish hoppers from your western box and use leaders in the 9 to 12 ft range in 6x. We had lots of smiling faces as the electroshocking survey concluded this past week. Currently the river is clear, low and flowing at 32-35 CFs. Water temperatures are between 53 and 56 F throughout the catch and release area. I gave a talk for the Rapidan TU/FFF in Warrenton, VA this past Wednesday and I'm sure that we'll see some new faces in the next few weeks--and that's about two hours from the wild Browns in the Gunpowder Falls.

Really folks you don't need to wait until Spring to go fishing again as the folllowing stream reports attest: cick on the read more button for more...

Water Temperature Questions Answered...

"As long as the water is cool the fish should
not experience too much stress, correct?"
Chad

Thanks for your question Chad.
You are correct.
This fish should not experience stress as long as the water is cool.
Today, Thursday August 31, water temperatures along the 7.6 mile catch and
release section of the Big Gunpowder Falls from Pretty boy Dam to Bluemount
Rd ranged from 53 F to 57 F.
We're in constant communication with State Fisheries Managers, biologists,
and Baltimore City, which ultimately controls the flow and temperature in
the Gunpowder. With their help and our constant monitoring of stream
conditions such as flow and temperature, we can better determine when it is
safe to catch and release trout without causing undue stress.
So, please go fishing and have a great Labor day weekend.
Hope to see you on the river and in the shop soon.
Best regards,
Low cool water, lots of fish stacked up...

With the water at 32 CFs expect to cover a good stretch of water before you find fish. That said, the water temperature is still in the high 50's so the fish are in good shape if a little skittish.Terrestrials and small caddis are still moving fish. Now is a good time to fish the pools and tailouts above Falls Rd. If you find deep runs and undercuts, spend some time trying bead head nymphs and small streamers. Fishing upstream is better with low water conditions so walk the trails down and fish back up.Thanks to Scott for the following stream report... click on the read more button...

We have the lowest water of the season, make it the past few seasons, at 32 CFs, the water temp is warming a bit and it's tough to get close to pooled up fish-even with 7x. Abandon all hopes of floating the river in any device. The fish are spooky throughout the catch and release section, so give the lower river a look. Access points such as Bluemount road , Monkton, Upper and Lower Glencoe and Sparks are certainly worth trying.click on the read more button...

A great fishing report. Weekend recap...

Many thanks to Ellen for the following report:"
Hi!
Here is my report for the story archive:

May 26-29: the annual Chesapeake Women Anglers' trip to Mill Pond Cottage at Masemore Road. Anglers from beginners to experts enjoyed the opportunity to be on the Gunpowder from dawn to night with breaks for great food, wonderful company, and excellent wine. Superb conditions for fishing, but the water level is alarmingly low for this time of year. The fish liked us, too: in total, the group caught about 30 trout, browns and rainbows ranging from 6" to 16" [two major brown trout, one taken on a spinner at the riffle above Masemore bridge in the evening of May 26th and the other taken above the power lines on a large (12) light Hendricksen at 7:30 am on May 28th]. The sulphur hatches were magnificant, but often discouraging since the fish probably have enough natural food to be ultra selective about artificials. At nightfall (8:00 pm) I took 6 at the riffle just below the big water at Masemore, using a large double humpy with a lurid yellow belly [I know, it was strange, but it must have got their attention]. Could have kept on going but it got so dark that I missed too many strikes. Early morning fishing at Masemore and Bunker Hill was a treat, two hours before the angler "hatch" arrived. Small (14-16) duns, larger blue winged olives (12-14), and parachute Adams (14) all worked well. Afternoon fishing: ants were successful down by Monkton. Thanks to BWA for all your assistance and advice!

The river is alive in the morning with lots of Caddis activity. Soft hackles and emergers have been working from Bunkerhill through Falls Rd. Sulphurs are just starting, a traditional sulphur wet paired with a soft hackle caddis should work fine.
Water temp is at 59 F, so we're seeing some very active fish. Flow is at 73 CFS, so we have lots of riffles and flats to cover

The river is low and clear at 66 CFs. Water temps in the high 50s-today we measured 57 F have made the fish very active and the rain in the forecast should help anglers get closer to fish this weekend. Expect the river to move a little this weekend and drop just as quickly. Some of our best days this past year on guidetrips were during and just after a spot of rain. Hendricksons in a #14-16 and quite a few Quill Gordons in #10-12 have been accounting for some nice fish. Soft hackles sized...click on the read more button...

If you're still letting the weather forecast dictate your fishing time you will be hearing about how wonderful the fishing has been without experiencing it firsthand. The river is at 85 CFs, clear and warming at about 52 F. We've had good mid-day hatches of Hendricksons with many of these early mayflies returning to the water as spinners by 4:00 PM. Plenty of midge activity is still happening above Falls Rd. Olives are a good bet through the weekend. As long as it warms up a bit and we have cloud cover the fishing will be outstanding.Earlier in the week we had a group of four beginners out with two guides on a full day trip.Everyone had a blast and upwards of ...click on the read more button...

Excellent early season fishing awaits...Black Fly Redux..

It's still hard for me to to believe that we've had such great early season fishing during the past two weeks. The river is at a nice steady 76 Cfs , ( we typically fish it from 55 to 225 CFs so if it moves a little over the weekend it should still be clear and very wadeable-just bring your rainjacket along. We've had warmer water this week after a gate change from the 55 foot level to the 10 foot level. With a little spillover, the river temps are now in the mid 40's and climbing--think active fish!!!We've heard many enthusiastic reports of between 1/2 dozen to three dozen fish caught during some mid-week outings. With rain in the forecast this weekend, early morning nymphing should be very productive. Stop in and check out a few dynamite Hendrickson nymphs, (while they last) that are sure to move a few.
Thundershowers, powerful fish and one that's not taking the river for granted...

High water has made dry fly fishing interesting, think about using big Western attractor patterns like a Madame X or Double Humpy sized #8-12from Bunkerhill to York Rd. Terrrestrials like ants, beetles and small hoppers, (Ed Shenk's Letort pattern in a #12 is one of my favorites) have been very effective from Bunkerhill to Masemore. Up top, above Falls Rd. Large Nymphs, like #12 Copper John and traditional streamers like Black Nosed Dace and Grey Ghosts sized #6-8 have accounted for some bruisers.

The city started pulling water last Thursday fromn 55 ft so the water temps were on the cool side, between 52- 55 F before spillover. With any measurable rain this week we're certain to have some spillover and the water should warm up a bit in the 60-65 degree range.Kepp in mind that it will still be relatively clear because the river is largely buffered by the park lands surrounding it. It' sbeen a little tough to fish dries because the cooler water and warmers air temps combine mid-summer to create a mist just above the surface of the river. All of this points to active fish in heavier flows , so put up your 7x and fish 5x for a change you might need it based on the 13-15" fish we've been picking up on guide trips. Flows this week are well down from last weekend...

A tall tale from Carson Satterfield

The following tall tale was written by Carson Satterfield, daughter of a Backwater Angler customer. Carson wrote this story for an assignment in 5th grade at Sparks Elementary School last Spring. The assignment was to create a tall tale, using all of the traditional elements of the tall tale. Carson decided to address topics with which she is familiar, fishing and the Gunpowder River. The story is fictional and any similarities to real persons or events are coincidental. Carson is in no way personally affiliated with Backwater Angler and has received no compensation from the fly shop for her story (though her dad is arguing for a discount). Enjoy!
Fish love high water...

We had a few people in this weekend actually fishing. Most of the tubers we encountered had beer to spare.Folks that made the hike above Falls Rd were rewarded with less traffic, more scenery and quite a few willing fish.Caddis came off in the early morning hours and the fish settled for a beetle or a hopper by afternoon.Last night we had another epic rainstorm and flow was up from 150Cfs to around 600 Cfs. So, we have spillover- water coming over the top of the dam and the surface water might warm the river up from around 58 F this weekend to the mid-60's if it continues. When the flow is above 385Cfs we generally like to give it a day or two to settle down. With warmer water temps if the river drops we should see some hyperactive fish by the weekend-heck they probably needed a break anyway.

When will the water go down?

Remember last year? Everyone was fishing the middle of the river because there were no edges, no undercuts, and no log jams with any water around them to create back eddies. Now everytime I see Rocky he tells me that he is building an Ark. When will the water go down?
In short, when it stops raining. But until then just go fishing. Heck the waters pushing hard enough that you could pretend that you're out West somewhere, but without the black flies. If the high water continues here are a few pointers,
#1.Don't wade to deep.
#2.Use lots of shot if you're nymphing.

We had lots of folks in today getting ready for the weekend. Mothers day is Sunday so y'all come out to the shop this Saturday and meet Ken Lagerveld from Scott, Bauer and Chota. We'll have some steamed shrimp and stories for you around 1 PM.
If you are fishing this weekend remember that the fish are already wet and usually get fired up after a shower. San Juan worms are a safe bet and the upper river should be off color enough to allow one to get close to fish without spooking them. Skating an elk-hair in a #18 is a safe bet.

Change is good.

When asked the question, “Should I fish today?”
My standard response has been, “get out of the house before your better half hands you a punch-list starting with: 1.Clean out the Garage. 2. Ditto for the basement. 3.And by the way, the yard could use some attention….

We are a spoiled lot. We’re five minutes from the river, and with the advent of the new fangled stream gauge we can now wow callers from three hours away with quips like, “Hendricksons are coming off around 2:30 PM, the water is 51 F, is clear, and the flow is 180 Cfs.

“180 What?”

Cfs., (cubic feet a second). That’s engineer speak for flow.
Many confuse Cfs. with chronic fatigue syndrome. This correlation might have merit, particularly if you wake with the sun on a weekday, are still too tired to put on a tie, but somehow manage to slap a sandwich together, grab the gear bag, a lucky hat and your favorite rod, and make it down to the shop to ask, (click on the read more button)

Snow in the Spring?

Winter is holding on and has provided us with soggy yards and would you believe, a full reservoir. The reservoir has rebounded from a low of 17% of capacity,(this Fall) to being chock full of water! As I write this water is brimming over the top of the dam and the fish are jumping.-You'll have to take my word for it because it's dark out there. The water temp is 50 F. Flow is 2.2 at Falls Rd., that's about 170 CFS, (cubic feet a second) according to the new USGS stream gauge. Try Olives in the #18-22 range. The Sun might have to come out again for the stoneflies to start buzzing again. Weighted streamers are a good bet and an olive or brown flashabugger in a #8 is a great searching pattern.

Susquehanna Update

I'm a New Orleans native so I've only started calling Stripers "Rockfish". Whatever you call them you should give these fish your attention in the next few weeks. Water temps on the flats are still hovering in the 40's but according to Capt. Jeff Lewatowski, "Fishing on the Susquehanna Flats has picked up in the past week but cold weather is still making it tough to connect." Jeff is very humble indeed. This weekend Dr. Phil Franklin, the proud new owner of a St. Croix Legend Elite 8wt, reported on a great great morning on Jeffs' Parker 21 with nearly two dozen Rockfish released.Contact Capt. Jeff at www.lewscfa.com or phone at 410-808-5105, you will be impressed.

Opening Day Chaos

This Saturday, March 29th is the opening day of the stocked trout season. It will be a very busy time on the lower river between Corbett Rd. and Sparks Rd..
Be sure to bring your own rock, (so that you have a place to stand) and a camera, because even your best friend won't believe the spectacle. Egg patterns, woolly buggers and large nymphs should spell disaster for these hatchery darlings. Of course we would suggest that everyone releases their catch but who are we fooling. In the upper river above Bluemount anglers should find lots of Wild browns taking little black and early brown stoneflies in the riffles. These dries range in size from #14-18 and are prevalent throughout the upper river. It is especially important to look for downed trees and log jams because the stones have to crawl out before they hatch. Water temp is around 42 F and is still low and clear.

The Susqehanna Flats Catch and Release Season will start on March 15th.

The Susqehanna Flats Catch and Release Season will start on March 15th and will last thru May 3rd. This stretch of water is where a lot of the market gunning for ducks took place.

Be sure to stop in the Decoy Museum after a morning on the flats. Eight weight rods work well but nine weight rods will allow one to throw bigger flies and handle heavier sinking lines. Our favorite lines are the Airflo 200 and 300 grain Depthfinders and the Scientific Angler’s Wet-Tip Express Sal*****er in 275 and 375 grain.
